Penn State Turf and Ornamentals Field Day to be held on August 8, 2018 on the University Park Campus

Penn State Turf and Ornamentals Field Day is our chance to show you the results of turfgrass research and demonstrations designed for golf course superintendents, sports turf managers, and lawn care operators; and provide tours and hands-on demonstrations for landscapers, nursery operators and others interested in ornamental horticulture. What was formerly Penn State Turfgrass Field Day, has been expanded to include a Core pesticide education program from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, followed by morning breakout sessions on ornamental plants and landscaping. In the afternoon program, attendees can participate in tours of turfgrass research at the Joseph Valentine Turfgrass Research Center from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, or three breakout sessions dealing with weeds and other pests, pruning, tree of heaven ID and control, ticks in the landscape, soil and disease diagnostic lab tours, and a tour of the Penn State Arboretum from 12:45 to 4:00 PM.

Golf Track (4 credits of PA Pesticide Cat. 7, 23, and 18; and 0.30 GCSAA Education Points will be awarded for attending the Golf Turf Track).

  • UAV technology (Drones) and its potential in making agronomic/pest management decisions in turfgrass
  • Disease (anthracnose, Pythium blight, & dollar spot) and insect (ABW & grubs) control on golf turf
  • Earthworm control research
  • Foliar fertilization research
  • Potassium fertilization research
  • Bentgrass cultivar research
  • Naturalized fine fescue species evaluation

 

Lawn/Sports Turf Track (3 credits of PA Pesticide Cat. 7, 23, and 18 will be awarded for attending the Lawn/Sports Turf Track)

  • UAV Technology (Drones) and its potential in making agronomic/pest management decisions in turfgrass
  • How to conduct an irrigation audit
  • Technologies for testing methods for athletic field safety: A demonstration of the current technologies to help ensure field surface quality
  • Hybrid synthetic surfaces & natural grass sod grown on plastic
  • Disease, weed, and insect control
  • Fertilizer evaluations
  • Turfgrass cultivar evaluations
  • Athletic field research
  • Low maintenance turf
