Penn State Turfgrass Students Succeed at Sports Turf Manager’s Association Student Challenge!

Penn State Turfgrass Science Students took first in the 4-yr and second in the 2-yr division in the Sixth annual STMA Student Challenge in San Diego, CA on January 21, 2016.

Alum Inducted into Georgia Hall of Fame

Marsh Benson, an alumnus of the 2-year Golf Course Turfgrass Management Program at Penn State, spent 26 years at Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters Tournament, before retiring in April this year. Benson was inducted along with two other veterans of the profession: William Smith, CGCS, (pictured on the right) from the Country Club of Columbus in Columbus; and Chuck Underwood, CGCS, (pictured on the left) from Northwood Country Club in Lawrenceville.

Penn State Professor Selected for the Tombros Early Career Professorship

In February 2014, Peter Tombros '64 AGSCI, '68g AG EC established the Tombros Early Career Professorship in the College of Agricultural Sciences. John Kaminski, associate professor of turfgrass management, was selected as the first holder of the $500,000 professorship.

Penn State Students Win Trans-Mississippi Turf Scholarships

Penn State senior Sean Kelly was selected as the 2014 Vickers Scholarship winner, highlighting the class of eight collegians who comprised this year’s Trans-Mississippi Golf Association Turf Scholarship Winners. Kelly received the highest honor – a $7,500 scholarship – as he completes his Associate’s Degree in Golf Course Turfgrass Management. He also receives an engraved medal and other gifts from the Trans-Miss Golf Association (TMGA).

Dr. McNitt Wins PTC Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Andrew McNitt received the PA Turfgrass Council’s Dr. George Hamilton Distinguished Service Award at the 2014 Penn State Golf Turf Conference. Dr. McNitt has been with Penn State serving the turfgrass industry for over 30 years. After receiving his B.S. degree in Horticulture in 1983, he took a position as a county extension agent in Southeastern PA and worked extensively with golf course and athletic field managers for six years.

Mark Kresovich extends his right hand to a Beaver Stadium visitor on a warm, sunny, late July afternoon. Calloused, cracked and dry, Kresovich’s hands have all the markings of a seasoned laborer. His grip is firm and inviting as he slides his slick, mirror-lensed sunglasses up over his sunburned forehead and welcomes outsiders inside his domain with a wave.

Students Receive GCSAA Scholarships

Penn State students were awarded 45% GCSAA scholarship dollars this year, with seven students receiving a total of $13,500.

Professor Receives Award

The Dubin Pioneer Award recognizes current or former University faculty, staff, and technical service employees who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary service to advance the Outreach and Online Education vision at Penn State. Dr. Turgeon is being recognized as the first tenured faculty member to accept the challenge of teaching online at Penn State.
