Penn State Turf and Ornamentals Field Day is our chance to show you the results of turfgrass research and demonstrations designed for golf course superintendents, sports turf managers, and lawn care operators; and provide tours and hands-on demonstrations for landscapers, nursery operators and others interested in ornamental horticulture.

Wet Weather and Diseases Create Problems on Pennsylvania Golf Courses
Abnormal temperatures and frequent rains during the spring of 2018 have led to mowing injury and disease problems on Pennsylvania golf courses. The worst of the problems began to occur in central and western PA during late May, when daytime temperatures climbed into the 80’s and night temperatures were in in the mid to high 60’s.

A Tribute to Noel Jackson, Turfgrass Pathologist (Dec. 25, 1931 – May 29, 2018)
Noel Jackson, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology at University of Rhode Island, passed away peacefully at home at age 86 with his loving family on Tuesday May 29th. Dr. Jackson was a natural teacher, with tremendous passion and curiosity for learning. He inspired a generation of students to pursue careers in the turf industry and academia.

Penn State Students Learn About Turf Management Practices in Italy
Ten undergraduate students, faculty, and staff from Penn State’s turfgrass program traveled to Italy during the second week of May as part of TURF 499 “Turfgrass Management Practices in Italy,” an international study course. The 3-credit course involved weekly lectures during the 2018 spring semester on golf course management practices and attitudes towards golf in Europe. The course culminated in an 8-day trip to visit several golf courses in different regions of Italy. Italy was of particular interest because we wanted students to observe how golf course managers and owners are adapting to a recent ban on synthetic pesticides for golf course turf.

PTC Scholarship Winners Announced
The Pennsylvania Turfgrass Council announces the winners of the 2018 PTC Student Scholarships. This year’s recipients are Nathaniel Leiby, Aleksander Schuler and Shawn Moore.
